First Aid is an emergency care or treatment given to an ill or injured person before regular medical aid can be obtained.
When we talk about first aid, there are 3 P’s to always remember. They can be referred to as the aims of First Aid. They are;
- Preserve life
- Prevent the Situation from worsening
- Promote Recovery.
Students and Staff are at a great risk of accidents and injuries because they spend a great deal of their time at school. As such, accidents that could potentially lead to serious injuries and long term health problems can occur at school.
More so, there are some incidents that need immediate attention and if there isn’t, could lead to loss of lives.
For instance, when a person suddenly becomes unconscious and all efforts to revive prove abortive, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a procedure that could save that person’s life.
It is said that brain cells start to die when deprived of oxygen for up to 5 minutes, and of course, we all know what happens next. Cases like this need to be handled quickly and immediately before emergency service providers arrive.
Hence, it would do a lot of good if school staff get equipped with this life saving skill that can be useful in school and even at home should these emergency situations arise.
In addition to being equipped with basic first aid information and skills, it is imperative that schools have first aid kits that are well stocked and and at their disposal at all times.
A First Aid Kit is a collection of supplies and equipment that is used to give emergency medical assistance/treatment.
The content of your first aid kit should be appropriately stocked to cope with a range of emergency situations, in adequate quantity (depending on the size of your school) and situated at strategic positions.
What should your First Aid Kit contain?
These are some essential and key items that make up a First Aid Kit. Some of them are, Bandages, Thermometer, Safety Pins, Antiseptic wipes, Scissors, Instant Cold Pack, Gloves, Gauze roll and pads, Elastic Bandages and more.
